THE 1920S AND FLAPPER GIRLS ARE BACK IN FASHION. BRITISH TV SHOW DOWNTON ABBEY HAS INFLUENCED THE 1920S COMEBACK ALONG WITH THE RECENT GATSBY FILM FROM BAZ LUHRMANN. AS A TRIBUTE TO THE ROARING TWENTIES I HAVE PUT TOGETHER SOME ORIGINAL VINTAGE DECO FASHION PHOTOGRAPHS. THESE WERE ALL INDIVIDUALLY HAND TINTED IN THEIR DAY, BECAUSE THEY WERE PRINTED IN AN ERA BEFORE COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY.

FLAPPER GIRLS KNEW THEIR FASHION AND THEIR PHILOSOPHY. THEY KNEW HOW TO DRESS AND HOW TO DRINK AND THEY SPOKE THEIR MINDS. WOMEN OF THE 1920’S WERE A DIFFERENT BREED FROM THE WOMEN WHO CAME BEFORE THEM. THE ROARING TWENTIES WERE ALSO KNOWN AS THE JAZZ AGE. I AM DEDICATING THIS POST TO THE ORIGINAL FLAPPERS, THE GATSBY GIRLS, THE SHOP GIRLS AND THE MOVIE STARS.
BEFORE THE GREAT GATSBY F.SCOTT FITZGERALD PUBLISHED HIS BOOK FLAPPERS AND PHILOSOPHERS IN 1920. FITZGERALD WAS PLUGGED INTO THE VIBE OF THE 20’S LIKE NO OTHER AUTHOR.
REAL FLAPPER GIRLS WERE EXTREMELY MODERN WOMEN OF THE 1920’S. THEIR FASHION WAS DARING FOR THE TIMES AS WERE THE NEW SHORT HAIRSTYLES SUCH AS THE ETON CROP, BOB and SHINGLE WAVE. THE CLOCH HAT WAS A STANDARD IN EVERY GIRLS WARDROBE. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN THE HISTORY OF WOMENS FASHION HEMLINES BEGAN TO RISE, TO SHOW MORE LEG.
THE ORIGINAL FLAPPER GIRLS WERE THE INSPIRATION FOR THE FABULOUS FASHION FROM THE GREAT GATSBY. THEIR ATTITUDES WERE THE INSPIRATION FOR THE CHARACTERS AND THE PARTIES IN F,SCOTT FITZGERALD’S JAZZ AGE NOVEL THE GREAT GATSBY AND THE SIX FILM ADAPTATIONS THAT FOLLOWED INCLUDING BAZ LURHMANN’S RECENTLY RELEASED 3D FILM.
THE FLAPPER GIRLS EVEN HAD THEIR OWN MAGAZINE. BEING A FLAPPER WAS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST FASHION IT WAS ABOUT A MOVEMENT, A NEW WAY OF LIFE FOR LIBERATED YOUNG WOMEN.
The gorgeous Josephine Baker was made notorious by her famous banana costume but she was a landmark star for many reasons. She was a dancer, a movie star in Europe and a civil rights activist in America.Josephine Baker was born in the USA to an African American mother, but ultimately made france her home. The people of France were captivated by Baker and the open arms of the French public during the 1920s made Baker a musical star. She sang, she danced and she created jungle stage fashion that wowed her audiences. Josephine Baker loved France back in return and during The Second World War she worked for the French Resistance carrying messages across the border and working as a spy. Bakers celebrity was the perfect cover for the kind of work required of her by the Resistance movement. Josephine looked like a flapper but she had the clear mind of a spy and the heart of an entertainer.
THESE VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS OF FRENCH FLAPPERS PLAYING TENNIS ARE SOOO CHIC. THE FASHION ON THE COURT WAS EXTREMELY STYLISH IN THE 1920S. THE HEADSCARF WAS A 1920S EQUIVALENT TO THE LESS STYLISH 80S SWEATBAND.
THIS VINTAGE POSTCARD DEPICTS A LADY PRETENDING TO PLAY A FLUTE WHILST HOLDING A BUNCH OF FLOWERS. I LOVE THE THEATRICAL NATURE OF THESE RETRO POSTCARDS.
THIS SET OF 4 HAND TINTED PHOTOGRAPHIC POSTCARDS FROM THE 1920’S DEPICTS A FASHIONABLE FLAPPER GIRL WITH A PIXIE HAIRCUT SET IN A FINGER WAVE HAIRSTYLE. SHE IS IN A ROMANTIC SET OF POSES WITH HER DAPPER BEAU.
