BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE POSTCARDS FEATURING FASHION

1920s illustration 001 The above postcard was printed in germany during the 1920s. The dresses that these women are wearing are a great example of 1920s fashion.

1920s japan002The above postcard was printed in Japan some time around the 1930s. It is interesting to see the westernised hairstyle and mode of dress.

60s & 70s Dress Patterns Retro Sewing Inspiration

I’ve been collecting these great vintage sewing patterns in thrift stores. I like the fashion illustration on sewing patterns. Knitting patterns generally have photographs on them instead of illustrations & I wonder why that is? hmmm I might need to do a google search on that when I have a spare minute.dress patterns001dress patterns005dress patterns006dress patterns004dress patterns003dress patterns002dress patterns007

1920s Figures, Diets & Photographs

1920s-red001deco-lady-1920sThin boyish figures became fashionable in the early 1920s. A straight up and down figure with little to no bust was desirable. Women began the arguably unhealthy practice of dieting. According to a home beauty course from the 1920s women were advised that there were, you may and may not foods which consisted of:

You May Not” foods

Potatoes

White bread

Candies

Rich pastries

Too much butter

Too much cream

Too much sugar in coffee and tea

Pancakes

Waffles

Cereals

Thick soups

Pork (interestingly lean pork is considered healthy today)

Any fat meats

Desserts

You May” foods

Poultry

Almost any lean meat except pork

Graham, rye or bran breadstuffs

All green vegetables

All fruits

Fruit juices

Eggs

Thin milk (not much cream)

It is also recommended to keep your bowels in perfect condition and to avoid laxatives.

Love the Environment & Get Crafty the Retro Singer Sewing Machine Way. Carbon Neutral Craft.

Have a look at this vintage sewing machine

YARN BOMBING

I have just purchased this stunning little Singer sewing machine. The machine is solid steel, works perfectly & was manufactured in Scotland in 1940. It is a hand crank machine, which makes it more than just an awesome piece of machinery, it makes it carbon neutral, as I won’t need to plug it in to do my sewing. The sewing machine is heavy duty & sews thick canvas, leather & denim. Forget the plastic machinery of today & rock out with an old fashioned singer! These models are still very popular in developing countries such as India, where electricity is not always available.

1930’s Photography & Fashion, Turbans, Shingle Hair & Fur Coat

1930s-deco-shingle wave hair 0021930s-turbanDURING THE 1920S NEW, LIGHT MACHINE AGE FABRICS, WERE COMING INTO FASHION & HEMLINES WERE GETTING DARINGLY SHORT. HOWEVER DURING THE 1930’S SKIRTS WERE LENGTHENING & FASHIONS WERE A LITTLE MORE REFINED & CONSERVATIVE. CLOCHE HATS WERE REPLACED WITH PERFECTLY COIFFED HAIR & TURBANS WERE COMING INTO THEIR OWN. EYEBROWS WERE SHAVED OR PLUCKED & PENCILED ON IN THIN HIGH ARCHES.
